Having an amazing florist on your wedding day is probably THE most important design decision you will make! A florist that just GETS YOU and can bring your wedding day vision to life is key! I brought my fave: Vanessa Ingersoll of Cultivated by Faith here to give you the DL on everything you need to know about hiring the right florist for your wedding day!

We worked together on this Joshua Tree elopement, where Vanessa created the MOST GORGEOUS ceremony set up, bouquet, and boutonniere! She really brought Zoe and Zac’s vision to life, not to mention we had crazy winds this day and her ceremony set up held up THE ENTIRE TIME!!!! What?!!!

Tell me a little about yourself and how you became a florist!

My name is Vanessa Ingersoll! I am a wedding, and elopement florist in SoCal. Coming out of high school I had no idea what I wanted to do. About 2 years after my husband and I got married! We had a super intimate wedding in Yosemite National Park (AHHH) and didn't hire any vendors! The only thing I ordered was a bouquet from a florist. That weekend there was a huge storm in Yosemite that prevented the florist from delivering the florals so I put one together myself with what I had. At the time, I thought it was the best bouquet ever and decided I should be a wedding florist. The bouquet was awful, but I am glad I gave this a shot!

What is your favorite part about being a florist?

My favorite part about being a wedding florist is seeing everything come together after adding florals. I think flowers make such a difference in a wedding day, and I take pride in getting to do that for my couples :)

What is your biggest piece of advice to couples looking for a florist? What should they look for?

I highly believe that when looking for a florist you should find someone who has the same style as you. I still get inquiries every once in a while from couples having super elegant weddings. Though I would LOVE to take that on, it really isn't my style. I would be doing clients a disservice if I took their wedding on. With that being said, not all florists are able to say no to work sometimes (people have to eat) so I would make sure that you take it upon yourself to only inquire with those whose style you REALLY love. It's way better than being disappointed with their work! ALSO - If you don't have a big budget for flowers I would communicate what is most important to you for your day - floral wise. For example, if I were getting married today I would really want to make sure that my ceremony florals and bridal bouquet are show stoppers. I'd put more money towards those things. This means that I probably wouldn't be able to have big centerpieces, but I'd be okay with that! Be okay with not having everything be lush and expensive looking (unless you have a crazy floral budget) because I am positive that your florist can come up with pretty cool, and less expensive, alternatives.

What is the most important question (or 2) a couple should ask a potential florist?

I would suggest making sure that you are on the same page with your florist as far as with what you'll be getting. When I first started I overpromised on things that weren't feasible for me to accomplish. Be on the same page about expectations you have from each other! Also, give your florist freedom to design! As a florist, when clients give creative freedom to us we produce some of our best work! I would also include your florist in your design process to ensure your color schemes are cohesive! Keep your florist in the loop with all colors/dresses/etc!

What is the most important thing to keep in mind for florals on your wedding day?

On your wedding day know that it's okay to relax!!! You have hired all of your favorite vendors to come and make this day seamless for you. Focus on what the day is!!! Before anything you are marrying the love of your life! Enjoy it :)
